Wren - Take Flight & Write

Writing Instrument of the Year 2025, Stationery Awards, London

A beautiful and infinitely refillable writing pen, equipped with a Japanese-made writing tip. We're on a mission to make choosing refillable options easier, so you can now buy two (or more!) Wren pens and save 10%

Each year, an estimated 9 billion pens are thrown away, contributing to growing environmental waste. Many writing tools are designed with convenience in mind, often leading to a cycle of frequent replacements, which generates significant waste and limits options for those seeking more sustainable, long-lasting choices.

As a product designer and craftsman who loves writing, I became frustrated with the waste created by disposable pens. They would pile up in drawers, waiting for a specific refill, or worse, end up in the bin despite being perfectly usable – if only they had ink.

After years of designing and handcrafting calligraphy and fountain pens for creatives worldwide, I decided it was time to tackle one of the biggest culprits: the everyday writing pen. The result? The Wren – a pen designed not only to write beautifully but also to last a lifetime, helping to reduce the mountains of waste created by disposable pens.

Full FAQs and a video guide to getting started with your Wren can be found here.

What ink can I use?
The Wren is compatible with all standard Fountain Pen Inks and we have a beautiful range of colours, which are perfect for the Wren and can be found here. Please note the Wren is not suitable for use with our Shimmer Fountain Pen Inks, No.60 Pigment Black Ink or Calligraphy Inks.

Some ink colours can concentrate in the tip, so you may experience a lighter colour after a line or two. This is completely normal and looks quite nice!

How do I store the reservoir and tips?
You can store reservoirs and tips, and change to a different colour using spare reservoirs and my reservoir storage containers.

How long will the tips/ink last?
You can expect the high-quality, Japanese-made tip to last for months of use. We tested a single ink fill in the Wren on a plotter – a device used for precision drawing – and it wrote consistently for 344 metres. That's the equivalent of 50 A4 pages of handwriting!

When the tip eventually dulls, you can find packs of three replacement tips here.

Anything else I should know?
Yes! I’ve designed the pen to include ‘micro-grooves’, tiny ridges that enhance grip without using plastics. Please note: the black and midnight colourways do not feature these micro-grooves, as they have a grippy matte finish.

Excited to test my new pen…
I mainly need a pen to journal and to annotate margins of readings. I like to have one at my desk, bedside, and on person when out.
First impressions: it’s an unexpected feeling in one’s hand. I had been so far used to plastic Lamy pens. There unfortunately over time became leaky and messy - my drawer is stained by them! - hence my search for a cost effective but more reliable solution. The Wren feels like porcelain and yet slightly rough. It looks like it should feel heavier in the palm.
When extended, the first impression is that I am more accustomed to pens being a little longer.
The packaging is beautiful - like Apple products - ideal for gifts.
It already comes with a small bottle of ink which I think will last a while, so in hindsight I feel it was a mistake to buy a spare bigger bottle. The reservoirs will not reach the bottom of the big jar, so I will need to get a pipette.
When filling the reservoir, I was a little worried that the ink was not appearing in the tip, so I gave the reservoir a few squeezes.
I also bought some spare tips, reservoirs and containers. For my mechanical pencil and highlighter pens that I keep on person, I like to carry spare lead and refills. I want spare ink to hand without causing a mess if I run out when not at home.
I might keep this double midnight Wren bedside for journalling and get the double-tipped Lumos (blue and red basic writing tips) for annotating papers.
It will take some time to get used to a non-metal tip, but at least it’s all cleaner and I can be confident having the pen on person without causing a mess even when adding fresh ink.
They send a complimentary tea bag with the box. Everything is well-wrapped in paper packaging - all recyclable, and good experience to unpack like Apple products.
I think a Wren with an engraving and the spare parts would make a perfect gift.

Love the Pen

I'm too embarrassed to tell you how many fountain pens I own. I received my Wren, loaded it with Iroshizuku, and am truly enjoying the writing experience. My other pens will be on the sidelines for awhile.
