Too many pens and their refills are disposable by design. Similar to printer ink cartridges, pen companies want you to buy into their format so they can keep selling you replacement pens or refills repeatedly. It's good for their business, but it's bad for the planet and stifles creativity.

As a product designer and craftsman who loves using a variety of pens to create illustrations and designs, I had this very problem! Pens would sit in my drawer for years, either patiently waiting for that very specific refill, or I was just loath to dispose of an otherwise fully functional pen that had run out of ink.

Having designed and handmade calligraphy and fountain pens for creative folks across the world full-time for over 6 years, I decided it was time to apply my knowledge to the pen I used most of all and one of the biggest culprits when it came to its disposable nature: the fineliner.

    What ink can I use?

    The Lumos is compatible with dye-based Fountain Pen Inks, so long as they don’t contain particles (such as shimmer inks) or binders (like acrylic or shellac).

    Exception to the rule? We sell a splendid waterproof pigment ink (our own No.60 Fountain Pen Waterproof in Pigment Black). Or, if you want to splash out, Sailor Kiwa-Guro ink is a great option too.

    What are the differences between the Duo and the Single Lumos?

    The Single Lumos has one tip and one ink reservoir, which is double the Duo's reservoir size.
    The Duo Lumos allows you to have two different pens in one body, allowing you to easily change between nibs and ink colours on either side.

    I have seven Lumos pens, varying colours and styles, mostly single tip, so i am already a big fan. What's not to like, no leaking, instantly refillable with fountain pen ink, which seems to last a very long time. Easy to refill, no ink everywhere, once you have got the hang of it. Pick a tip you like, you have quite a few provided to choose from, easy to get hold of refills. I carry mine in my smal handbag it's on hand and ready to use instantly. You also get a small vial of ink provided i carry mine inside a small plastic container, haven't had to use it yet. i could go on and on. i am certainly a fan ... downside ??? Why weren't they around when i was a kid? Could i recommend them ... you betcha I could.

    Beautifully engineered pen

    What a brilliant idea the Lumos is. I love handwriting, but struggle to produce beautiful/neat/consistent writing and I’d love to succeed with brush lettering or similar. Having used a wide variety of dip pens, nibs, fountain pens, and felt pens I always ended up covered in ink and never achieved consistency and spent more time swapping nibs, inks etc, flushing fountain pens to change ink colour and generally faffing rather than letter writing. Having the choice of two ‘tips’ and two colours in one pen is great fun and having written my last letter using the Lumos, and taking more care, better spacing and so on - the verdict from my sister was that it was much improved. It won’t last, but it’s easier, more fun and much more variety. The ‘tips’ are lovely to write with, smooth and happily don’t dry out when left for a few days, and ‘waking’ them up is simple, and more importantly, clean - just dip in ink and off I go. Now I just need someone to offer a foolproof method of learning brush lettering - but I fear it’s simply down to patience and practice. A beautifully engineered and made writing (mark making) instrument. I love it. And does anyone remember those huge ball pens that had 6 or 8 colours in them? I loved those when I was a child and this is a much more sophisticated version, albeit with two colours on hand.
