Too many pens and their refills are disposable by design. Similar to printer ink cartridges, pen companies want you to buy into their format so they can keep selling you replacement pens or refills repeatedly. It's good for their business, but it's bad for the planet and stifles creativity.

"It is brilliant: Beautiful, the perfect weight, a range of nibs, satiny ink. The drawing (almost) does itself."
David Downton

As a product designer and craftsman who loves using a variety of pens to create illustrations and designs, I had this very problem! Pens would sit in my drawer for years, either patiently waiting for that very specific refill, or I was just loath to dispose of an otherwise fully functional pen that had run out of ink.

Having designed and handmade calligraphy and fountain pens for creative folks across the world full-time for over 6 years, I decided it was time to apply my knowledge to the pen I used most of all and one of the biggest culprits when it came to its disposable nature: the fineliner.

    What ink can I use?

The Lumos is compatible with dye-based Fountain Pen Inks, so long as they don’t contain particles (such as shimmer inks) or binders (like acrylic or shellac).

Exception to the rule? We sell a splendid waterproof pigment ink (our own No.60 Fountain Pen Waterproof in Pigment Black). Or, if you want to splash out, Sailor Kiwa-Guro ink is a great option too.

What are the differences between the Duo and the Single Lumos?

The Single Lumos has one tip and one ink reservoir, which is double the Duo's reservoir size.
The Duo Lumos allows you to have two different pens in one body, allowing you to easily change between nibs and ink colours on either side.

Can I purchase replacement tips and reservoirs for my Lumos?

Best fountain pen for sketching and writing.

I have owned and used a number of fountain pens that I use for sketching and writing: Montblanc, Pelikan, Lamy, etc., along various gel pens over the years. These are good pens when new, but found that after a while, the nibs did not always start straight away, the line thicknesses varied depending on the ink in the reservoir and the ink would dry up quickly in the reservoir as I always keep the pen in my trouser pocket.

With some trepidation, I ordered Tom's Lumos Mini to try out. This is what I have found so far: the technology is different from a traditional fountain pen, but retains the solid dense lines from fountain pens – something that is important for me, it delivers a consistent line thickness regardless of how long the pen has been kept in my pocket, it starts up straight away after uncapping, tip thicknesses can be changed easily and the reservoir holds a decent amount of ink before requiring refilling.

I have recently tested the Lumos Mini on a 10 day holiday for sketching on a daily basis without running out of ink. The pen was kept in my trouser pocket (in warm weather) without affecting its performance.

In fact, I was so impressed that I ordered a Twin Lumos Pro Duo whilst I was still on holiday. The added bonus is that it is easily serviceable by simply cleaning under a tap whilst affordable replacement nibs and ink reservoirs are available – a truly sustainable system.

The pen has given me a great deal of pleasure to use, it is very reliable and performs perfectly every time I uncap it.

Knocked It Out of The Park

Everything it promised to be and more. First of all it's gorgeous, the photos don't do it justice, even the feel of the pen is a delight. It was easy to set up and moved so beautifully across the paper. I've been looking to replace my disposable sketching pens for awhile because of the costs, the availability in my rural area and most importantly the environmental impact. The Lumos Pro fit the bill perfectly.

    Limos Pro perfection!

I ordered this pen for my artwork. I like to do line and wash watercolours and was tired of disposable pens that dry out quickly. This pen is perfect with the fine liner tip. I’ve been using it for doodle art also and it’s great. Holds a lot of ink, I haven’t had to refill it yet. I’m in the US, got delivery in about a week and the pen and ink were beautiful packaged. I’ll definitely be buying more for myself and gifts. Thank you for a great product!

    Étonnant

Parfait pour écrire et dessiner, même sur un papier très granuleux comme l’Arches aquarelle. Pratique, un coté pinceau et un coté ligne dans le même stylo !

    Stylish pen

Likes: the tip is like a Micron pen, but I can write at an angle, which is more natural way to write; it is not messy like a fountain pen; it feels good in my hand; choice of tips enabled me to find the one the best suits me; the pen is stylish.
MInor dislikes: the tip holder screws in firmly and was difficult to remove.
