Meet the Wren – Write Off: the infinitely refillable pen that gives disposable pens another life. An estimated 9 billion disposable pens are thrown away globally each year. It’s a staggering number. Having spent years creating pens designed to be reused for a lifetime, I couldn't help but feel for these poor little pens – destined to be buried for hundreds of years. It was time to close the loop – to find a way to repurpose them and give them a brand-new life.

Enter the Wren – Write Off, my boldest project to date. Over the past year, we've been working with schools and organisations to intercept stationery waste at the source, preventing it from reaching landfill. This precious plastic is then meticulously separated and sorted to create the wonderful colours you see before you.

Crafted in collaboration with the brilliant Brothers Make, each lid is made by chipping, injection-moulding and hand-finishing the reclaimed plastic – a process that’s more artisan than assembly line. This unique method means every lid is completely one-of-a-kind.

This isn’t just a pen – it’s a small act of rebellion against waste, and a celebration of creativity.

We're on a mission to make choosing refillable options easier, so you can now buy two (or more!) Wren pens and save 10%

Full FAQs and a video guide to getting started with your Wren can be found here.

What ink can I use?
The Wren is compatible with all standard Fountain Pen Inks and we have a beautiful range of colours, which are perfect for the Wren and can be found here. Please note the Wren is not suitable for use with our Shimmer Fountain Pen Inks, No.60 Pigment Black Ink or Calligraphy Inks.

Some ink colours can concentrate in the tip, so you may experience a lighter colour after a line or two. This is completely normal and looks quite nice!

How do I store the reservoir and tips?
You can store reservoirs and tips, and change to a different colour using spare reservoirs and my reservoir storage containers.

How long will the tips/ink last?
You can expect the high-quality, Japanese-made tip to last for months of use. We tested a single ink fill in the Wren on a plotter – a device used for precision drawing – and it wrote consistently for 344 metres. That's the equivalent of 50 A4 pages of handwriting!

When the tip eventually dulls, you can find packs of three replacement tips here.

Anything else I should know?
Yes! Each lid is completely unique, made using a one-of-a-kind blend of upcycled plastics. That means colour density and placement will vary from pen to pen. Some are bold and bright, others more subtle – it’s all part of the charm. Think of it as a lucky dip for your desk. No two lids will ever be the same.

Here’s the how (and why)

Waste Plastic: Reimagined

Every year, billions of plastic pens are thrown away – we wanted to do things differently. By collecting waste from local schools and organisations, we’ve reimagined what a pen can be: thoughtfully made, built to last, and crafted with care from reclaimed plastic.

Giving waste a second chance

We partner with local schools and organisations to collect used plastic pens and markers – saving them from landfill and starting their journey toward something better.

Prepped with care

In their workshop, the incredible team at Brothers Make meticulously sort, wash, and chip the plastic into colourful flakes – ready for transformation.

Small batch, big impact

Each pen lid is injection moulded, creating one-of-a-kind pieces. Every lid is then finished by hand – it's small batch production done right.

Happy Pen!

Writing with this pen and the ease of flow to the nib was a pleasure to use. (First use took me a few moments to get the ink to the nib )

Beautiful tactile pen

The Wren feels so beautiful to hold, it brings back the joy of writing. Using it makes me feel more present in my task, I slow down and enjoy the act of stringing words together.

Mightier than the sword

A small thing of great beauty. Wonderful weight and writes like a dream. Even my handwriting is now legible.

The Brass Wren Takes Flight!

Everything about Tom’s Studio’s “why” speaks to me: sustainably and earth-friendly products that also provide aesthetically pleasing and functional writing tools. The Wren checks all the boxes! From order to delivery, I could not be more pleased.

The excitement I shared with a friend while opening this birthday gift to myself was akin to the Wren taking flight! The capillary function of adding ink was pleasing to witness. The balanced weight of the brass Wren just fits right in my hand. Since owning the Wren, it has been my constant companion alongside the Semikolon notebook and 07 ink.

The brass Wren is a true conversation starter in the office. My husband, who usually just indulges my love of writing instruments, has even asked for information about purchasing one—this has never happened before.

Since owning the Wren, I have purchased two more within the month. However, it's worth noting that the weight of the colored Wrens is lighter than the brass, and it doesn't give the same effect. I highly suggest that if one can afford the brass, get it; you won’t be disappointed!

Tom, thank you for creating such great products and sharing them with your supporters across the globe!

Beware!

Goodness knows, I tried to resist those annoyingly persistent Facebook ads, but I am weak, and a pen adict. I didn't have a hope.

Even after I placed the order, I still thought it would just be a clever marketing spin.

Unfortunately, I loved my initial Wren from Amazon so much that I have since bought a further three Wrens, a Lumos Mini and a Lumos Duo direct from Tom's Studio. And I can't swear that I won't buy more. Save yourself. Just say no. The ads aren't a spin. These are lovely pens. A joy to write and draw with. With so many tips, finishes, colours, inks and accessories, this is one huge delightfully inky rabbit hole.

Clever Tom.

( Oh, and the free Jam Doughut tea sample I received is possibly the nicest tea I've ever had.)
