Wren - Take Flight & Write

A beautiful and infinitely refillable writing pen, equipped with a Japanese-made writing tip.

Every year, millions of disposable pens are thrown-away, adding to the growing environmental waste. Similar to printer ink cartridges, pen companies design their products for short-term use, pushing you to repeatedly buy new pens or refills. It's profitable for them, but disastrous for the planet – and limits your creative freedom.

As a product designer and craftsman who loves writing, I became frustrated with the waste created by disposable pens. They would pile up in drawers, waiting for a specific refill, or worse, end up in the bin despite being perfectly usable – if only they had ink.

After years of designing and handcrafting calligraphy and fountain pens for creatives worldwide, I decided it was time to tackle one of the biggest culprits: the everyday writing pen. The result? The Wren – a pen designed not only to write beautifully but also to last a lifetime, helping to reduce the mountains of waste created by disposable pens.

Full FAQs and a video guide to getting started with your Wren can be found here.

What ink can I use?

The Wren is compatible with all but the most experimental fountain pen inks (think shimmer + iridescent). We offer a beautiful range of ink for fountain pens, which are perfect for the Wren and can be found here.

Note: Calligraphy Ink has an acrylic binder which will block the pen and is not suitable for use with the Wren.

Some ink colours can concentrate in the tip, so you may experience a lighter colour after a line or two. This is completely normal and looks quite nice!

How do I store the reservoir and tips?
You can store reservoirs and tips, and change to a different colour using spare reservoirs and my reservoir storage containers.

How long will the tips/ink last?
You can expect the high-quality, Japanese-made tip to last for months of use. We tested a single ink fill in the Wren on a plotter – a device used for precision drawing – and it wrote consistently for 344 metres. That's the equivalent of 50 A4 pages of handwriting!

When the tip eventually dulls, you can find packs of three replacement tips here.

Anything else I should know?
Yes! I’ve designed the pen to include ‘micro-grooves’, tiny ridges that enhance grip without using plastics. Please note: the black and midnight colourways do not feature these micro-grooves, as they have a grippy matte finish.

Great pen, with a little critique

I have been using the Lumos now for half a year and the Wren has completed my writing tools kit. It provides with a great writing experience and I am considering it as a gift for important people in my life. Only critique: the two o-rings are really keeping the Wren nicely closed, and this is a good. But it is hard to open and I wonder if replacement rings will be available at a certain point. Using o-rings continuously for my work, I know how fast they degrade and since they are already stiff now, I suggest to consider providing them.

Phenomenal pen, with a couple small caveats

As a felt/fiber pen lover who also loves writing in brown ink, finding a pen that would let me write in the color I wished was virtually impossible, outside of specialty artists' fine liners. I'm no artist or pen guru, but I fell in love with the Wren as soon as I saw it. It fills easily and writes beautifully on Tomoe River Paper, Midori Paper, and even just regular copy paper and post-it notes. This is truly a workhorse pen, and I'm grateful for it. I look forward to using it every day.

I have a couple SMALL critiques, namely that this needs a clip. If this is to be a pen I can carry around, having a clip would be incredibly helpful. I'd be able to clip it to the inside of my purse so I don't have to fish around the bottom for it, to the inside of a pocket, or to a Moleskine notebook. I'm on the hunt for a clip that will it, but it'd be great if future iterations had one, or the option for one.

Secondly, and this isn't even really a critique, but I'd love to see this as a normal-size pen that can take a larger cartridge (AND HAS A CLIP) so you can use it longer between refills. I write a lot both personally and for work, so having one that doesn't have to be refilled as often, but has that DANK felt tip, would make my life.

Nevertheless, this is a great pen! My absolute favorite already. This is true innovation, and I hope more pen creators follow suit. :)

A perfectly weighted, stylish little pen

I had a very impatient wait for my Wren to arrive in New Zealand but it finally got here yesterday, beautifully packaged of course. What a lovely little pen! I have it filled with my favourite blurple Kung Te-Cheng ink from Noodlers and it is behaving very well so far (this ink is notoriously prone to causing problems in fountain pens). I love how easy the Wren is to uncap compared to the Lumos, and I also love the colour combinations. Mine is pink on the outside, purple on the inside, so it's easy to find in the bottom of my bag! The colours on the website are very true to what I see in real life.

This pen is shorter than most pens when in use but I don't find that to be a problem. It feels more comfortable in my hand than other similar-sized pens, probably because it has a decent bit of heft to it.

Now my only regret is that I didn't order two of them!

I’m absolutely delighted by the design and enjoy writing with this pen very much. The quality of materials and construction is outstanding just like all the pens I have from Tom’s Studio. Another excellent product added to my collection of pens.
