Made using wool from Welsh Mountain sheep, this distinctive composite material transforms natural wool fibres into something solid, tactile and unexpected. Its lighter, softly flecked finish reveals subtle variations as the material is turned, giving every finished pen its own character.

Studio Handmade is a return to where Tom's Studio began.

Ten years after the first handmade pen emerged from a tiny workshop, we've brought the craft back home. Each Studio Handmade pen starts with precision-machined brass components before being individually turned, finished and assembled by hand in our Somerset workshop.

This collection celebrates our fascination with materials and the hidden potential in things others overlook.

Created in collaboration with Solidwool®, each pen barrel is individually turned from solid composite material made using British wool. The familiar softness of wool is transformed into something strong and durable, while retaining the natural fibres, texture and variation that give the material its character.

Each pen features a solid brass grip and cap, paired with a hand-turned Solidwool® barrel. Over time the brass will naturally patinate, creating a writing tool that becomes more personal with every year of use.

Choose your writing experience:

  • Fountain Pen – supplied with a converter and your choice of nib.

  • Rollerball – supplied fitted with a refill, plus a spare refill.

A celebration of creativity, craftsmanship and material innovation, Studio Handmade × Solidwool® takes something wonderfully familiar and uses it in an entirely unexpected way.

Choose one of the following nibs:

The nibs used in our Studio Handmade fountain pens come fitted with an Ebonite Feed, each one heat set by hand here in the studio.

Ebonite is a game-changer for ink flow. Its natural hydrophilic properties (think super ink-grabbing powers) mean it holds more ink, giving you a smoother, wetter writing experience that’s perfect for those who like their pens to glide across the page.

It is a Standard International (Euro-size) rollerball refill, making it easy to find compatible replacements.

Every Studio Handmade pen is turned and finished by hand in our Somerset workshop, so no two are ever quite identical. You might notice small variances in grain, colour, or exact dimensions from pen to pen, and that's not a flaw to overlook, it's the whole point. Each one carries a little of the hands that made it, and a little of the tree it came from.

The Studio Handmade story

One of my favourites

(Don’t tell the others...)

This whole series is a bit of an obsession of mine. Each pen has its own character, its own grain, its own quiet charm, and I'm fairly certain I say "this one's my favourite" about each new collection.

Toms Studio x SolidWool

Wool, but not as you know it

Solidwool turn hardy British fleece, once overlooked by farmers, into a composite that’s strong, smooth and unmistakably wool at heart. Each pen shows off those natural tones in its own way, so no two are quite alike. Made by hand, made to last, and made to cherish.

Hand Crafted & Unique by Design

The material makes the pen

From raw material to writing instrument, every Studio Handmade pen is shaped by hand in our Frome workshop. It's a slow, considered process, where the beauty of the material guides every step.

Meet Martyn, our resident craftsman, whose skill and attention to detail bring each pen to life. Working with the unique character of every material, he makes each piece truly one of a kind.

Beautifully Presented

Perfect for gifting

Each pen arrives beautifully packaged, creating an unboxing experience that's every bit as special as the pen itself.

Inside, you'll find a handmade pen rest, a thoughtful little addition that gives your new writing instrument a special place to rest between ideas.

Back to where it began

Handmade, in the truest sense

Ten years after the first handmade pen emerged from a tiny workshop, we’ve brought the craft back home. Each pen starts with precision-machined brass before being individually turned, finished and assembled by hand.

"The patterns, figuring and subtle variations you see in your pen belong entirely to it — no two are ever quite the same."

Tom Gyr, Founder

Made from Nature. Shaped by Hand.

A pen with its own natural character, ready to become part of yours.
