Behind every pen we make is a small team of very real people, and it’s our mission to champion creativity from the amazing community of designers, artists, and illustrators we have the pleasure of working with around the world.
It’s our pleasure to introduce Ricardo “Near” Ajcivinac (@nearajcivinac), the Guatemala-based illustrator behind our new Lumos Metals sleeves, now paired with the Lumos Brass, Bronze, Stainless Steel, and Titanium.
When we set out to design the packaging, we wanted to honour the story inside these beautiful materials – the spirals and shavings from the lathe, the precision of CNC work, and the subtle tones of each metal – but with a twist. Ricardo took those textural references and turned them into something playful and explorative, packed with tiny details. We couldn’t be more pleased with how they’ve come together.
Below, a quick chat with the artist.
A quick Q&A with Ricardo
Tell us a bit about yourself.
Hi! I’m Ricardo, a visual creative and image maker from Guatemala. I mostly work with ink on paper and I’m deeply in love with dotwork.
What’s your favourite tool to use when drawing?
I usually prefer working with ink on paper, and then add digital colouring if needed. Right now, my favourite tool is the stainless steel Lumos.
Which Lumos tip do you reach for most – and why?
I tend to use the finer tips, mainly the 0.1 or 0.2, because I love adding lots of tiny details to every piece, and these are just perfect for that.
Where did you find inspiration for your Metals piece?
Mostly from my previous work and from exploring metal textures I could blend with the flowers I usually draw. I wanted to create something that would look great when using different inks for the final printed packaging.
What do you love most about the creative process?
Sketching on a blank piece of paper. You have complete freedom to experiment, explore different ideas, and then choose what best fits the project while communicating the right message.
What advice would you give to someone just starting their creative journey?
Practise as much as you can and don’t be afraid to make mistakes – that’s the best way to learn and improve. Over time, you’ll naturally develop your own signature style. My biggest advice: practise, practise, practise.
What are you working on next – any exciting projects in the pipeline?
Right now, I’m exploring new technologies and learning how AI can be used as a tool to enhance creativity rather than replace it. As a creative, I’m always curious and open to learning new things – even if they’re not directly related to drawing – because keeping your mind sharp and expanding your perspective helps you communicate your ideas better.
We’re thrilled to have Ricardo’s artwork wrapped around our Lumos Metals – a collection that celebrates precision, craft, and the joy of making. When yours arrives, take a closer look… there's true brilliance in the details!
