Watercolour Half Pan - Payne’s Grey
Balanced neutral for shadows and atmosphere
Extra colours for topping up, experimenting, or finding new favourites.
- Artist-grade watercolours, hand-poured in our Somerset studio.
- Recycled plastic pans made from ghost nets recovered from the Cornish coast.
- Richly pigmented colour that re-wets beautifully, mixes cleanly, and flows smoothly on the page.
A quiet, dependable grey you’ll reach for again and again. Blended from blue, black and iron oxide, it’s ideal for soft shadows, muted steel tones and well-balanced neutrals. Especially useful when you want depth without the heaviness of pure black.
We set out to turn the tide on waste by designing half pans made from ghost nets – discarded fishing gear collected off the Cornish coast that would otherwise pollute our seas. No virgin plastics here. Each pan is hand filled in our Somerset studio with richly pigmented, artist-grade watercolour paint, mixed with a traditional binder of gum arabic and honey.
Each colour has its own quirks, and the studio team has spent time getting to know the temperament of every pigment. Every half pan is poured slowly, in layers, to build depth and consistency, resulting in paint that wets beautifully, mixes cleanly and flows smoothly on the page.
