Studio Synthetics: A Guide to Our Paintbrush Heads

Synthetic fibres have come a long way, and we’ve been busy putting them through their paces. We’ve tested stacks of brushes, compared filaments, painted countless sheets of paper, and gathered honest feedback from the brilliant artists in our studio and wider creative community. The more we learned, the more confident we became: modern synthetics are not only a match for traditional natural hairs – in many ways, they’re better.
They have genuine super-powers: they hold generous water, spring back beautifully, keep a consistent point, and stay reliable over time. They don’t shed, they’re wonderfully resilient, and they allow us to design brushes built for performance and longevity. Simply put, synthetics let us create brushes you can trust, day in and day out.
Studio Synthetic: Sable
Our closest match to natural hair. Studio Sable uses soft, thirsty, responsive fibres that pull to a fine point and deliver premium performance across watercolour, gouache and watered-down acrylics. They’re wonderfully versatile – perfect for delicate details, expressive strokes and generous washes – and tough enough for regular use. We pair Studio Sable heads with our aluminium handles for anyone who wants a synthetic brush that feels refined, reliable and beautifully precise.
To start, we’re launching a limited set of five brush handles, each paired with its own perfectly matched brush head. And (thanks to the overwhelming number of you who asked for it) the heads are fully removable. So if your favourite brush has spent a little too long soaking in water, dried up with paint, been chewed by an overly enthusiastic pet, or vanished into small, determined hands… there’s no need to bin the whole thing. Just pop the head off and replace it with a fresh one.
In the long run, we’re working on expanding the system so these five handles will fit a wider family of brush styles. You’ll be able to mix and match to create your ideal combination, whether you work tiny details, bold washes or something in between.
For now, the range includes: Round 2, Round 4, Round 6, Round 8 and Flat ½in – a solid foundation for everything from precise marks to sweeping strokes.
